Canyon Prince Island Wild Rye

Common name: Canyon Prince Island Wild Rye
Botanical name: Leymus condensatus 'Canyon Prince'

One of the best known and utilized native grass selections in Southern CA. Beautiful blue-grey foliage that will reach a height of 2'-3' and spread 3'-4' wide. Flowers rarely. It does spread by rhizomes although not as vigorously as some closely related species. Can be extremely drought tolerant and care must be taken not to over water this species as it can rot from the center. Otherwise, it is carefree and requires virtually no maintenance.

This shrubby evergreen perennial reaches a size of 3' tall and 6' wide with narrow, gray green foliage and a dense habit. Its flowers always emerge as mauve purple, and are produced on 4' tall stalks. Blooms throughout warm months. It can bloom continuously in mild climates if spent flowers and stalks are removed. It should receive sun to part shade, with little or no summer watering. It is hardy to frost.
