Botanical name: Hypericum calycinum

Hypericum calycinum is an evergreen perennial in warm winter areas. Grows 1' high and 1'-2' in spread, and spreads by underground runners therefore considered invasive in some areas. Yellow flowers bloom in summer and fall; it will bloom profusely if in full sun, less if planted in shade. This ground cover is great for stabilizing difficult slopes or for covering bare patches under oak trees. It does best with regular watering but will survive drought conditions.

Wheeler's Dwarf Pittosporum

Botanical name: Pittosporum tobira 'Wheeler's Dwarf'

This handsome dwarf form of the Pittosporum tobira grows into a low, dense mound, 2'-3' tall and 4'-5' wide. This shrub is covered with glossy, evergreen foliage. Small, fragrant, white flowers cover this shrub in spring. It prefers full to part sun and is drought tolerant once its established. Give extra water in summer. Wheeler's Dwarf is dependable and easy to grow. Prune in winter to keep shape.

Red Japanese Maple

Botanical name: Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum'

This Japanese Maple is a small deciduous tree reaching 15'-25' tall and wide. This tree grows upright and rounded, leafing out in spring with bright red loved leaves, changing to wine red color and then in fall, back to a bright red color. It needs acidic, moist soil. Keep roots cool by mulching well. It would prefer afternoon shade in warm, inland areas. Water regularly and more during hot spells.

The Ginkgo biloba, with its distinct fan-shaped leaves, initially grows with a pyramidal habit, but later becomes wide-spreading. It is generally not bothered by insects or disease. It slowly reaches 35'-50' tall and wide. It needs regular watering and more during hot summer months. Flowers are inconspicuous. Fall color is spectacular with changing color of leaves from light green with a yellow tinge to yellow.

Botanical name: Quercus lobata

The Valley Oak is a large deciduous tree that grows 60'-80' tall. It develops a rounded canopy that spreads 50'-70' wide with leaves deeply lobed and rounded. The Valley Oak is very heat tolerant and drought tolerant. It is a native to CA and attracts butterflies and birds.

Silver Dollar Gum

Common name: Silver Dollar Gum
Botanical name: Eucalyptus polyanthemos

This evergreen tree is graceful looking, reaching 25"-75' tall and wide, with a moderate growth rate. It has a slender, straight form with foliage that is grey-green in color and oval to round in shape. It needs full sun to grow well. Silver Dollar Gum is drought tolerant once it's established. Juvenile leaves are silver colored and round, thus the common name.
