Nandina domestica is a graceful upright shrub that grows from 3'-6' in height. It gets its name from its bamboo-like growth habit. When thinned from the center it bears a remarkable resemblance to bamboo. It is best used in groups. It can be used in a shaded patio or out in a shrub border with full sun. An interesting feature of Heavenly Bamboo is the bronze color in the new growth when planted in full sun. It also bears clusters of white flowers in the spring.

Phormium ?Wings of Gold' has a bright olive green blades with creamy yellow margins. It grows to about 3' high and 3' wide. It likes full sun or half sun and prefers the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Once established, it needs medium amount of watering.

This Japanese Maple is a small deciduous tree reaching 15'-25' tall and wide. This tree grows upright and rounded, leafing out in spring with bright red loved leaves, changing to wine red color and then in fall, back to a bright red color. It needs acidic, moist soil. Keep roots cool by mulching well. It would prefer afternoon shade in warm, inland areas. Water regularly and more during hot spells.

This useful groundcover is an evergreen perennial that has dark green, spoon-shaped leaves. It spreads quickly forming a dense mat. Small blue or purple flowers appear on erect spikes in spring and summer. Ajuga reptans prefers part shade to full shade and moist, well draining soil. It is considered invasive in some areas.
